Today we have so many platforms on which to view video content, and this got me wondering, how many of the current video streaming platforms available to you, are you currently using and how frequently are you using them and why?
As a Digital Video Content Specialist, I tend to consume loads of video content to make sure I have a good sense of what is going on in the content creating industries. As a result, I had to start creating a viewing schedule to keep track of things.
Here is my current list, in order of how frequently I view content, on the different platforms and the amount of shows I view on them.
I don’t have a DSTV subscription any longer as it is too expensive, especially these days with all the different options mentioned below.
1. Netflix
Cost: $11.99 per month
It lets me watch on four devices at the same time.
Over the past festive season, I had the opportunity watch loads of shows and movies currently on my Watch List and I still was not able to get through half of them.
2. Amazon Prime Video
Cost: R60 per month
They might not have as large a library as Netflix, but their original content includes a lot of good and entertaining shows such as The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel and Patriot etc.
They also have amazing examples of "made for mobile first" shows which are not restricted to fixed duration limits like linear TV e,g Brown Bag Wine Tasting with William Shatner.
3. Showmax
Cost: R99 per month
This is to mainly watch South African produced content and Vikings!
4. Facebook Watch
Cost: Free
They have a wide range of different genres which I find very entertaining, including these shows, Strangers, Ball In The Family, which averaged over a million views per episode and Sacred Lies, etc.
5. iStarring Stream
Cost: R250 per year
This is a new South African player in the streaming market. They have a small catalogue of mostly independent, locally produced movies. Support local, because Local is Lekker!
6. TV2GO
Cost: Free
I became aware of this platform in September 2018, when I read a news article about South African soccer legend Jomo Sono, launching his own TV channel on this platform. They have over 150 TV channels. They seem to offer a combination of live TV channels and video on demand options.
I almost forgot to mention YouTube, which I mainly use for watching tutorials, music videos and they also recently made a selection of movies available for free or paid.
I also tend to squeeze in many webinars. As you can see, there are so many choices and I would like you to share with me your selection of platforms in the comments section please. I look forward to reading them.
